On the eve of Afghanistan's presidential election, Sky News presents a special programme examining what the future might hold for the troubled country.
Jeremy Thompson will be in Kabul from Monday 17 August to provide coverage of the elections, including a one-hour special featuring politicians and top opinion formers from the region. The elections have already been postponed once this year amid security concerns, and violence across Afghanistan has reached its worst levels since the Taliban's fundamentalist Islamist government was ousted in 2001.
Sky News' coverage will also explore Britain’s role in Afghanistan. So far in July, 22 British troops have lost their lives, taking the death toll of British soldiers in the country to 126. With our own general election looming, politicians can no longer ignore Britain’s role in the country, and issues surrounding a lack of troops and insufficient equipment have seen the UK government come under fire in recent months.
Sky News Asia Correspondent Alex Crawford will be in and around Kabul speaking to ordinary people to gauge their opinions, eight years on from the invasion. She will also be speaking to Taliban units in the region.
Sky News Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay, meanwhile, will be with the US Marine Corps, asking whether an increase in troop numbers will actually make a difference and discovering the main reasons behind the recent increase in deaths.
Coverage from Monday 17 to Friday 21 August
